Sustainability
As one of the country’s preeminent research universities, the University of Chicago demonstrates a commitment to being an equally green national leader, as exhibited by the creation of a Strategic Sustainability Plan, outlining quantifiable goals and tracking metrics, including a commitment to reduce green house gas emissions by 20 percent (from 2009 levels) by 2025. Through a single-stream recycling system, the University of Chicago diverts nearly 47 percent of waste produced on campus. The University strives to reduce single-occupancy vehicle use by encouraging alternative transportation across campus via a free bike share program and free or reduced cost public transportation. In the dining halls 37 percent of the University’s food budget goes toward local and organic sourcing. Facility standards include a minimum LEED Silver certification. Completed LEED buildings at the University include: one Platinum, six Gold and two Silver ; with an additional four projects currently underway. Sustainable Actions for a Greener Environment – S.A.G.E. – is the University of Chicago’s green leadership program. Held quarterly, dedicated members of the University community attend a training session where they learn how to raise awareness about campus environmental initiatives, contribute to the sustainability efforts of the University, and inspire their peers to integrate sustainable action into their daily life. The program is unique in that the hundred’s of trained SAGE Ambassadors come from among the ranks of University faculty, students, and staff, facilitating the opportunity for innovative green leadership and collaboration across all levels of the University.
