Sustainability
The University of Colorado Boulder is still serious about going green. This Sierra #1 Cool School (2009)—home of the nation’s first collegiate recycling program, first zero waste athletics program, first student-led Environmental Center, and first STARS Gold-rated campus—is not resting on its laurels. CU-Boulder’s reputation as one of the nation’s best destinations for environmental education is at least partially due to its top-notch research programs (CU-Boulder’s geosciences research portfolio ranks number one in the world for research reports published and cited in the literature). The new School of the Environment and Sustainability (SES) will open in 2015 in a state of the art Sustainability, Energy, and Environmental Complex (SEEC) on East Campus. This multi-disciplinary center will serve as a flagship for CU’s environmental cluster, bringing together a community of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty educators and government researchers, industry analysts, sustainability staff and local citizens. A faculty guided student organization called ICE (Investigating Careers in the Environment) brings environmental leaders to the campus to chat with students about emerging trends in the green jobs sector. CU-Boulder has cut potable water use 50 percent and reduced total energy per square foot 22 percent since 2006 while flat lining GHG emissions. CU-Boulder also eliminated synthetic pesticides from campus turf, achieved a LEED Platinum rating for a new campus residence hall and major lab building, implemented a “Fair Food” and local organic food sourcing policy in dining halls, and installed over 900-kilowatt of solar panels. The campus boasts an impressive 17 LEED-certified buildings (five Platinum, eleven Gold, one Silver) with another 9 pending certification.
