Sustainability
Opened in 2005, the University of California, Merced, is a new school with big green dreams. Even before classes started—ground was broken in 2002—the school set a goal to have every new building be constructed to meet at least Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards. The campus now has thirteen LEED certifications, including four platinum designations, and is anticipating Gold or Platinum levels for structures under construction and review. UC Merced is a unique campus in a unique place – just outside Yosemite National Park. The campus is surrounded by open space, much of which will never be developed as it is designated a nature reserve. Sustainability is part of the fabric of the campus, and is evidenced in every aspect of the university, from planning and construction, procurement and operations, to the research conducted into climate change, solar energy and energy efficiency. As part of its long-term plans, the campus has undertaken an ambitious pledge to become a zero-waste, zero-energy and climate-neutral university by 2020, and is already well on its way to fulfilling that commitment. Carpooling is encouraged and students can use the university’s free CatTracks bus service connecting the school to the train station and downtown Merced. Students take on their own sustainable challenges, including water conservation in the residence halls, and environmental stewardship programs such as Yosemite Leadership Program. As a member of the University of California system, UC Merced employs the Strategic Sourcing program to serve sustainable food and drink on campus, as well.
