Sustainability
From helping to form the Arboretum in 1936, to creating a certified organic Student Farm in 1977, and most recently establishing an Environmental Sustainability Student Coalition in 2020, UC Davis students have been integral to campus sustainability efforts. UC Davis trains students to tackle global sustainability challenges and offers on-campus opportunities for students to gain real-life sustainability experience, such as the Learning by Leading internship program in the UC Davis Arboretum and Public Garden, or The Green Initiative Fund, which allows students to develop and launch innovative sustainability projects on campus. Students also founded Unitrans, the community bus system run by students who drive and maintain a fleet of buses that run on compressed natural gas, and are in the process of replacing retired buses with emission-free battery electric buses. UC Davis is among the top five environmental sciences undergraduate degree programs in the nation. The campus has a Gold STARS rating and annually tracks sustainability performance in key target areas. UC Davis is making strides with a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions since 2007, a 31% drop in water consumption since 2008, and generating about 14% of the campus’ electricity with an on-site 16.3-megawatt solar power plant on campus. A new Green Home Office Certification was launched to help increase engagement and education around green actions while working from home. The campus is a bicycle hotspot with 40% of the student population utilizing bikes as their main mode of transportation to campus and a double Platinum Bicycle Friendly University and Bicycle Friendly Business designation by League of American Bicyclists. Green building practices include nine LEED Platinum buildings. In order to reduce the campus’s reliance on fossil fuels and immediately decrease energy and water use, UC Davis launched a large-scale construction project -- called The Big Shift -- in spring 2020 that lays the groundwork to transition the campus from outdated, inefficient district steam heating to more efficient hot water heating. UC Davis’ dedication to the environment and sustainability remains stronger than ever, from our research and teaching to how we operate our campuses and facilities.
