  • Sustainability

Texas Tech University has made an admirable green turnaround after being named by the Sierra Club in 2008 as having, well, a lot of room to improve its sustainability practices. Academically, TTU now offers an undergraduate major in environmental sustainability and research opportunities at the Texas Wind Energy Institute, and boasts more than fifty faculty members involved in active sustainability research. One notable project is the College of Architecture’s Sustainable Cabin project, a “living laboratory…that focuses on a variety of solutions embracing the creativity of architecture incorporating and celebrating sustainable design practices” such as solar panels, sustainable materials, and water harvesting. There are at least four environmental student groups on campus, including USGBC Students. A staggering 9.2 million square feet of on-campus buildings meet sustainability eligibility requirements, including 77,794 square feet of a LEED Gold building space, and a significant amount of TTU’s energy is produced by cogeneration technology. The campus uses largely sustainable pest-management strategies, partners with Dell Computers to offer student discounts on Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT) compliant computers, and partners with Staples to promote recycled-paper office supplies. For transportation, TTU operates ten completely electric vehicles in its fleet, designates bike lanes on campus, and makes city bus service available to students. An ecosystem in its own right, the university maintains a recycling station on campus that diverts 187 tons of waste from landfills. Not a bad turnaround in just five years.
