Sustainability
Texas State University is home to one of the largest geography departments in the United States. Its students and faculty advance theory, practice and policy in water resource management, natural hazard management, human health and recreation, and land use and land cover change, applying geographic information technologies and principles in innovative ways and in diverse environmental settings. The university is committed to protecting water, one of the earth’s most valuable resources, and established The Meadows Center for Water and the Environment. Students and faculty, through various projects and programs, work to bring awareness about river ecosystems, influence public policy, and educate the community about the important role water plays in all our lives. On campus, the university appointed a fulltime coordinator of recycling and waste management to run a campus-wide recycling program. The city of San Marcos also developed the Go Green initiative to educate the community, including the Texas State University campus, about the importance of reducing your carbon footprint and implanting sustainable practices for the future. In the classroom, Texas State offers a graduate interdisciplinary degree with a concentration in sustainability studies, through which students can pursue either a master of arts or a master of science. The university encourages all students to take simple steps to conserve energy, from taking shorter showers and powering down devices like laptop computers when they’re not in use to walking or biking to class and using natural light instead of artificial light whenever possible. Around campus, several rainwater collection cisterns irrigate the landscape, which is flush with drought-resistant and low-water vegetation.
