Sustainability
SUNY Buffalo, which is the size of a small city with 40,000 students, faculty, and staff, aims for “climate neutrality” by 2030. With its hundreds of buildings and miles of roads, the university’s environmental impact is significant, which is why, for the past decade, SUNY Buffalo has been undergoing a series of environmentally friendly construction projects, with LEED-designed buildings opening on all three campuses. In the dining halls, 452 tons of waste are eliminated from landfills because of recycling and composting efforts, and 50 gallons of water per minute are saved in the school’s green dish rooms. Students are encouraged to use car-share services like Zip Car on campus, where five Zip Cars replace between 75 and 100 privately owned vehicles. The campus bus system, UB Stampede, is a popular alternative mode of transportation, and nearly 50 million pounds of carbon dioxide are kept out of the atmosphere every year due to student ridership. SUNY Buffalo is also the first SUNY school to institute a 100 percent smoke-free campus. There’s also a drug disposal drop-off on campus to help safely dispose of prescription drugs and keep them out of the water supply. In the classroom, students can pursue a career in sustainability without necessarily following the traditional environmental studies trajectory (though that’s definitely an option); many sustainability-focused courses focus on the interplay between ecological, economics, and social welfare by taking an interdisciplinary approach.
