  • Sustainability

SUNY Potsdam students are reminded on Earth Day that it takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose and are encouraged to plant vertical gardens on campus year round. The Potsdam Auxiliary and Educational Services, Inc. (PACES), a not-for-profit corporation that operates with SUNY Potsdam to run the dining services, campus store, and vending services, among others, is committed to the “farm-to-table” movement and, whenever possible, provides students with locally sourced food. PACES also composts fruit and vegetable scraps for use by nearby farms, eliminated plastic to-go bags, and implemented a trayless dining hall system to cut down on food waste and excess water consumption. SUNY Potsdam’s Zero-Sort recycling program encourages more students to recycle by collecting all recyclable material in one location rather than having the consumer do the sorting beforehand. This means that paper, glass, tin, aluminum, and plastics can all be deposited in the same receptacle, making it particularly helpful in a fast-paced dining hall. Around campus, students are encouraged to use Zip Car, a car-share program, instead of maintaining their own vehicle. This cuts down on carbon emissions and only costs $35 per year. In the classroom, students wanting to pursue a career in the wider field of sustainability can major in environmental studies, an interdisciplinary program that combines human and social sciences, and helps students gain an understanding of viable environmental policy and practice.
