Sustainability
St. Lawrence’s culture of sustainability extends from university operations to academics and co-curricular activities. The University drew from the success of its Adirondack Semester and launched the Sustainability Semester, where students live off campus at a nearby farmstead, are educated and exposed to environmental problems and solutions, and are guaranteed a paid internship in a sustainability-related field. St. Lawrence also added environmental literacy as a required component of the University’s core curriculum. St. Lawrence is committed to ensuring that a minimum of 15 percent of its electricity is derived from renewable sources. And, impressively, the university’s Johnson Hall of Science was the first LEED Gold science building in New York. Further, as part of St. Lawrence’s promise to achieve climate neutrality, all future construction will be designed to meet LEED Silver certification, including a new residence hall that opened in August 2014 and uses twenty-four geothermal wells for heating and cooling. The school is also aiming to lower its greenhouse gas emissions by trumpeting alternative transportation methods. St. Lawrence aims to lower its greenhouse gas emissions through alternative transportation methods, such as its green bikes program— where students and employees can “check out” bicycles—a ChargePoint EV charging station available free to the public, and sustainable management of campus grounds. Most of the campus is pesticide and herbicide free, the athletic fields benefit from a water-informed irrigation system, and low-mow zones increase biodiversity and reduce emissions. Dining Services also remains committed to sustainability by practicing pre-consumer food composting in its dining halls and purchasing food from a local agricultural cooperative.
