Sustainability
SIU Carbondale is certainly inclusive when it comes to going green. Supported by the student body, the sustainability initiatives of the campus include everything from composting to sustainable theater productions. Signatories of both the Talloires Declaration and the Illinois Sustainable Universities Compact, SIU Carbondale has also completed their first STARS assessment with a Silver ranking, and earned all possible points for Diversity and Affordability. SIU Carbondale boasts not only a vermicomposting facility, but also an aerated static pile (ASP) compost facility that allows for even greater recycling of food and landscape scrap on campus to be turned into valuable compost. Its new Transportation Education Center (TEC) is LEED Silver. Students’ creativity and ambition is leveraged through their encouraged applications for campus sustainability projects, funded by the Green Fee, a $10-per-semester student fee that goes toward projects which advance sustainability on campus. Since its beginning in fall 2009, the Sustainability Council has awarded almost $1.5 million to ninety-nine different projects. There are student representatives on Sustainability Council, a Going Green LLC (Living Learning Community) through University Housing, and a variety of organizations to also develop student leadership in sustainability. Academia is of course still a major component of an SIU education, and sustainability-related classes are offered in more than forty departments including agribusiness economics, forestry, geography, mechanical engineering, and media arts, just to name a few. With so many ways to get involved, SIU makes it easy to "become a Sustainable Saluki!"
