Sustainability
Scripps is ahead of the curve and is always looking for ways to conserve water in drought prone California. One key way the campus is conserving water is cutting back on the amount of grass maintained by the College, replacing thousands of square feet of turf with plants in mulch. Inside, students are encouraged to stay in the dining halls for meals rather than taking food to go and creating more garbage. The college is partnered with a supplier that uses recycled fiber for the paper products it provides to the school, and the company that produces the plastic can liners used at Scripps utilize between 30 and 90 percent recycled materials. Scripps students get creative when it comes to recycling, particularly when it comes to old textbooks, many of which have been repurposed for award-winning art projects that save the paper from landfills. Students looking to make a difference on campus can join clubs like Scripps Climate Justice, which aims to promote climate action at the college with the hope of influencing global climate change, and the Scripps Environment Club, which focuses on local and organic food and helps maintain the Scripps Garden. The Sustainability Committee at Scripps serves as an advisory counsel to the President of the college regarding campus operations, and all building contractors are asked to submit information on their sustainable practices and materials.
