Sustainability
Salisbury University has a long history of environmentalism. The university’s recycling program started more than two decades ago, and has recycled more than 6 million pounds of material. Today, SU’s overall waste-diversion rate is an impressive 51 percent. SU’s commitment to sustainability is evident in all aspects of campus life, from academics, to campus dining, to facility management, to dorm living. SU has partnered with the Maryland Board of Public Works to cut energy usage over fifteen years, and has won a sustainability award given by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Maryland Department of the Environment for its horticulture initiatives which include on-campus wildlife and rain gardens. SU’s Teacher Education and Technology Center is the first LEED-certified building on campus. All residence halls have energy-efficient washers and dryers, and 100 percent of buildings on campus have received energy saving retrofits. The university encourages students to use public transit by providing free shuttle buses and limiting parking on campus. Students interested in studying sustainability inside the classroom can major or minor in environmental studies. Outside the classroom, organizations like the Environmental Students Association, Smart Growth Club, Green Floor Living and Learning Community, and Garden Club provide a chance for students to join the greening effort.
