    Sustainability has definitely become a priority for Portland Community College and the school has made great strides in implementing environmental initiatives. The only community college to be a founding member of the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council, PCC is working diligently towards cutting its greenhouse gas emissions. The school is aiming to reduce levels by 40 percent from 2006 numbers by 2030. And PCC is well on its way towards achieving that impressive goal. The college is ardently pursuing Gold and Platinum LEED certifications and promises to achieve a minimum of Silver for all new construction projects. Importantly, PCC's dining services (at the Rock Creek campus) has adopted a closed loop system. This means that food served in the cafeteria comes from school gardens and food waste is directly returned to the soil in the form of compost. So you can indulge in delectable dining hall treats guilt free! Portland Community College also hosts a variety of environmental-themed events. For starters, the Sylvania campus runs an impressive computer eCycle drive. Last year, this event managed to recycle over 13 tons of computer equipment! The college also hosts PCC Recycles Day, where students and staff can learn about various recycling and composting programs and compete in recycling-themed trivia games. And, not surprisingly, PCC also actively participates in Earth Week. The school sponsors a variety of fantastic events during this week including talks on how to be sustainable, panels on green careers, conducting waste audits and the opportunity to make DYI recycled crafts
