  • Sustainability

For evidence of Moravian College’s impressive sustainability efforts, one needs to look no further than the school’s cafeterias. Dining services has made great strides in reducing campus waste by installing new napkin dispensers, replacing plastic bags with reusable bags and doing away with trays. Moreover, pre-consumer food waste is now composted and delivered to the Rodale Institute Experimental Farm. The campus employs a sustainability chef who runs the “sustainable table” of local, often organic, food prepared from scratch. Starting in September 2014 the Farm Fresh Market gives students, faculty, staff and the community a chance to buy fruits, vegetables, and locally produced wares every Friday during the semester. Moravian’s maintenance staff is also jumping on the sustainability bandwagon. All campus athletic fields are now fertilized using organic products. Additionally, wood chips and dye free mulch are used on landscape beds to allow for quicker decomposition. And, in an effort to encourage bike use, Moravian has outfitted residence halls with indoor storage space. Outdoor bike racks are also available throughout the campus. Further, to limit and/or curb the use of personal vehicles, the college offers a free campus shuttle to local malls and shopping complexes. There are also intercampus shuttles available for students looking to travel between North and South campus. Of course, Moravian’s undergrads are also at the forefront of this environmental movement. Led by student members of the Environmental Coalition (ECO), freshmen dorms were encouraged to participate in an energy conservation competition. The group has initiated a battery recycling program as well and endeavors to collect all of the cardboard and Styrofoam from freshmen move-in each fall. Finally, ECO has also conducted several waste audits in an effort to educate their peers.
