Sustainability
The Millersville University of Pennsylvania defines sustainability as “improving the quality of human life while living within the carrying capacity of supporting eco-systems,” and seeks to model this mission for its students both in practice and in pedagogy. The Millersville University Pond is a Certified Wildlife Habitat. The university has completed baseline sustainability measures such as construction of a new LEED-certified building, systematized reduction of office supply use, and implementation of a thorough campus recycling program. However, Millersville’s sustainability initiatives also include more inventive measures like the Millersville Farmers Market or the Zero Waste Commencement Ceremony, which, true to its name, diverted 100 percent of waste from landfills. In a more sweeping initiative, Millersville has tied part of its annual performance funding to the university’s efficacy in reducing its carbon footprint. The university has created specific measures to reduce its carbon footprint by 10 percent over five years, and if successful, will receive hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional annual performance funding. In terms of academics, Millerville’s Center for Environmental Science houses curricular concentrations in biology, chemistry, earth sciences, applied engineering, safety, and technology, geography, and weather information. Students participate in discussions, film screenings, and other enriching events during the annual Climate Week. Millerville’s Dining Services, working directly with students, encourages resource conservation through bulk and trayless dining, a special student-run Mother Earth Night, recycling and composting, and local purchasing and manufacturing when possible.
