  • Sustainability

Sprawling over 123 lush acres punctuated by lakes in Boca Raton, Florida, Lynn University offers eco-minded students a rich laboratory for coastal and wetland study. Water is a major concern in such a location, and as such, the campus recently began utilizing reclaimed water, rather than draining aquifer water, for irrigation. What’s more, in 2012, Lynn’s Going Green Initiatives performed a complete campus retrofit of water fixtures as well as lighting equipment, replacing over 7,500 light bulbs. Other Going Green Initiatives included construction of a new Central Energy Plant, a complete retrofit of campus air conditioning equipment, boilers and hot water heaters, and other energy-saving measures. Green transportation options for students include UCar Share and the Green Ride Program. An admirable model in its green campus updates, Lynn also stands out in its ability to engage students in sustainable practices. Lynn hosts a Sustainability Day on campus, presenting green activities, displays, and exhibits. In 2013, Lynn recruited over 300 students in a Citizenship Project to clean up trash around campus, nearby roads, the campus’s nature preserve, and its adjacent canals. Furthermore, these student teams re-landscaped select areas on campus with native, drought-tolerant plants, planted an herb garden for use by students, faculty, and staff, and revitalized Lynn’s certified butterfly garden. Students who wish to focus their academic studies on sustainability may major or minor in biology or environmental studies.
