  • Sustainability

Across five campuses and ten schools and college, Loyola applies sustainability to a common purpose of building a better society. The Institute of Environmental Sustainability strives to create solutions to the stress on our planet’s resources, expanding knowledge in the service of humanity. Teaching, research and outreach activities are focused on developing a conservation ethic for all Loyolans. Student-led businesses such as ChainLinks bike shop, Loyola Farmers Market and the Biodiesel Program provide entrepreneurial approaches to a sustainable economy. The Retreat and Ecology Campus is a living laboratory for students with a student farm, on-going ecological restoration and a place of solitude for reflection and spirituality. Loyola offers over 450 sustainability related courses each semester with academic strengths in Aquatic Ecology, Social Justice, Social Entrepreneurship, Supply-Chain Management, Environmental Advocacy, Sustainable Food Systems and Ecotoxicology. Over the last three years, student leaders have led successful campaigns to ban the sale of plastic water bottles and use of plastic bags, implement a sustainability fund, and adopt both a Climate Action Plan and a sustainable endowment policy. Recognized as #4 by Sierra Club’s Cool Schools, Loyola is AASHE STARS Gold rated, has seven LEED-certified buildings and, according to the school, more green roofs than any other university.
