Sustainability
Case Western Reserve University has signed the ACUPCC, committing the university to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions in pursuit of carbon neutrality, and conducts an annual GHG assessment, in which students collect and analyze data and make recommendations for reduction in the university’s carbon footprint. In 2011, Case Western Reserve published the Presidents’ Climate Action Plan, a road map for achieving institutional carbon neutrality and hired a sustainability director. CWRU has dedicated funding for infrastructure upgrades for increased energy efficiency and building performance. In the last three years, the university has reduced its GHG footprint. A new student Climate Leaders program is spreading the word on campus about the importance of large and small actions to further reach towards climate neutrality. On the green building front, a new University Center seeking LEED certification will open its doors in the Fall of 2014 with a state of the art living green roof, solar array and energy efficiency technology embedded. A new residential hall seeking LEED certification will house students in the Fall 2015. The university houses several centers of sustainability excellence including the Fowler Center of Sustainable Value in the Weatherhead School of Management, the Great Lakes Energy Institute and the University Farm, a 400-acre green campus that boasts several acres of local food production, conservation research and many unique natural endowments. Campus food service provider Bon Appetit purchases 35 percent of its fresh food and supplies from local farmers and food producers and composts 30 percent of its food waste.
