Sustainability
Lincoln University’s unique history bespeaks a future of equal promise: founded by black Union soldiers at the end of the Civil War, the school’s original mission was expressly to serve freed slaves in Missouri, and “to combine study and labor.” This mission continues, and in the realm of sustainability, Lincoln offers particularly notable opportunities in pragmatic sustainability fields. Offering undergraduate degree programs in environmental science and agriculture, as well as a master’s degree program in environmental science, the university boasts twenty-six faculty members involved in active sustainability research, distributed among the College of Agriculture and Environmental Science, the Cooperative Research and Extension, and the Department of Life and Physical Sciences. Particularly within Cooperative Research, students can submit specialized project proposals for funding by the university, provided the proposals are agriculturally relevant and support the USDA plan-of-work. In terms of co-curricular educational opportunities, Lincoln is home to a chapter of the national society Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Related Sciences (MANRRS), which promotes diversity in agricultural and related science fields; LU’s MANRRS chapter was awarded the 2012 Regional Chapter of the Year award by the organization. Furthering the campus’s agricultural know-how, LU’s cafeteria offers comprehensive locally sourced, seasonal, sustainable, and vegan food options, and the university hosts its own composting facility to divert cafeteria food waste from landfills and convert it to soil amendment, as well as a university-wide recycling program. For students seeking a unique emphasis on diversity, agriculture, and sustainability, Lincoln may be a great fit.
