  • Sustainability

Lewis University deepens its commitment to sustainability with every passing year. In 2012, the Illinois Campus Sustainability Compact awarded Lewis a bronze standard recognition level recognition of sustainability impact, and in 2013, the ICSC awarded Lewis at the silver level. This commitment informs the Lewis academic experience as well: students who concentrate in environmental science can further specialize in ecology or sustainability, and also benefit from local internship, volunteer, and curricular opportunities at institutions like the Morton Arboretum and the Shedd Aquarium. Annually, Lewis sponsors a Come Clean, Go Green Sustainability Contest, which in turn funds the creation and implementation of its winning projects. Students plant trees on Arbor Day and clear invasive species from campus nature trails on Earth Day, all coordinated by the Lewis University Sustainability Council. The campus collects and repurposes rainwater via collection sites, permeable pavers, bioswales, and The Glen filtration site and reservoir. Food waste is composted by Lewis’s dining services, as is landscaping waste from the campus’s beautiful nature trails (there is also a prairie restoration project maintained through environmental science classes). The campus excels similarly in energy conservation, using occupancy sensors, LED lights, Energy Star rated appliances, and white and green roofs to reduce energy consumption. Two electric-vehicle charging stations have been installed on campus for students, faculty, and staff. Lewis’s Student Pledge asks students for their commitment “to promote responsible stewardship of our environment and limited resources,” and the university itself sets a fine example of doing just that.
