  • Sustainability

Le Moyne College, a small Jesuit liberal arts college in Syracuse, New York, empowers its students to be “conscientious world citizens” when it comes to environmental responsibility. Le Moyne’s College Committee for Environmental Sustainability monitors and has reduced the college’s greenhouse gas emissions for every year since 2003, and works to educate students and the public about sustainability. The college is working continually to reduce the college’s negative environmental impact overall. Le Moyne recently achieved a LEED Gold certification on its new science building, and has been working since 2009 to implement energy-conserving LED lighting inside campus buildings. In its ongoing effort to reduce energy consumption and emissions, which the college sees as a spiritual imperative, the campus actively monitors sustainability practices in new construction as well as in electricity efficiency, landscaping, cleaning, operations, waste, and on-campus vehicles. It utilizes features like low flow appliances, Limited Range Thermostats, and a natural gas Steam Plant. The college’s dining program also composts food waste and has implemented a number of other creative sustainability initiatives including Weigh the Waste events, trayless dining, and recycling fryer oil into biofuel. Green majors at Le Moyne include biochemistry, biological sciences, environmental science systems, and environmental studies.
