Sustainability
Humboldt State University’s stunning coastal location near the Oregon border in northern California perfectly situates it to be a thought leader in environmental issues, and several influential organizations on campus are doing just that. One example is the Campus Center for Appropriate Technology (CCAT), which was the first of its kind and has inspired similar projects at wide-ranging colleges. Driven by student engagement, CCAT aims to demonstrate environmental responsibility through tours, workshops, presentations, hands-on projects, and even courses taught by students. Also notably, HSU students voted in 2007 to approve a student fee (now around $13.50 dollars per semester) to support the Humboldt Energy Independent Fund (HEIF), which invites students to create and design projects that reduce the campus’s environmental impact from energy consumption. More than forty-four student projects have already been commissioned, including a 10.5 kilowatt solar installation and new lighting for the sports stadium that reduces electricity and light pollution and saves $9,000 a year in energy costs. To support sustainable methods of transportation to and from campus, HSU has launched the online ridesharing service Zimride, hosts five Zipcars on campus, and hosts a bike-sharing program with the City of Arcata. In terms of research, Humboldt State Schatz Energy Research Center hosts a number of innovative energy research projects that students may become involved in, notably of both local and international scope ranging from regional renewable energy planning to electric vehicle readiness planning on the North Coast to increasing access to affordable off-grid lighting in sub-Saharan Africa, India and beyond. Academically, eco-minded HSU undergrads can take advantage of its coastal location with majors in botany, environmental science, and management, environmental studies, Native American studies, fisheries, biology, forestry, geology, oceanography, rangeland resource science, wildlife, or zoology, among others. Students also coordinate a number of other student-driven campus sustainability initiatives like the Graduation Gown Rental, the HSU Green Campus Program, the Waste-Reduction and Resource Awareness Program, Reusable Office Supply Exchange, HSU Takes Back The Tap, and Donation Dash. Beginning with the 2012–2013 school year, HSU implemented the Sustainability Tracking Assessment and Rating System (STARS) to manage its overall sustainability impact and earned a silver rating; by the 2016-2017 year, HSU submitted data to STARS for a second time and earned an improved rating of Gold, which was maintained in the 2020 submission.
