Sustainability
Located upstate in Oneonta, New York, Hartwick College’s notable history of sustainability practices dates back to 1971, when it created the 125-acre Pine Lake Environmental Campus to offer students a “living laboratory” in energy conservation, organic gardening, composting, waste reduction, and recycling. This campus, bordered by 3,000 acres of state park, has provided fodder for more than forty courses and thirty ongoing student and faculty research projects to date, and currently acts as a residence for approximately thirty students. In 2002, students in the class “Architecture of the Sacred” constructed Hartwick’s first green building, a 900-square foot strawbale house, and since then students have also constructed a cob house at the Lake. The college calls the Pine Lake Institute (PLI) for Environmental and Sustainability Studies “an example for the College and community as to how to live sustainably,” and the college has invited many distinguished sustainability leaders to speak, reside, and lead activities on campus. A member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, Hartwick is also a signatory of the Talloires Declaration. Annually for more than a decade, Hartwick chooses an environmental theme for the academic year; themes have included sustainable living, food in our lives, health and the human experience, globalization, water works, and climate change and balance. In 2005, Hartwick was awarded a Kresge Green Building Initiative planning grant for the green design of its first LEED certified building, Golisano Hall, and is in the process of commissioning the building’s systems to utilize 75 percent less energy than other campus buildings.
