Sustainability
Guilford College has a Quaker heritage that holds stewardship as a core value, so it’s no surprise that sustainability is a priority on campus. The College is an ACUPCC signatory and has committed to seeking carbon neutrality by the year 2047. It is also seeking LEED certification on all future construction over 5,000 square feet. The College performd ASHRAE Level II energy audits on 35 campus buildings, resulting in 430 implemented energy conservation measures. Due to these improvements, Guilford’s energy costs are the lowest per gross square foot of any institution of higher education in the region. The College has adopted composting policies to include Dining Services food waste. Compost is used for brewing compost tea (a natural fertilizer), top-dressing campus grounds, and as a soil amendment for the Production Garden and landscape beds.. Guilford proudly utilizes produce grown on its on-campus Production Garden and neighboring farms in an effort to reduce its carbon footprint. Approximately 10,000 pounds of produce is grown annually on the campus Production Garden. Cooking oil used in meal preparation is donated to a local producer of biodiesel fuel. An initiative to install more than 200 solar panels has resulted in the production of 9,000 gallons of hot water daily for dorms, the cafeteria, and P.E. Center. Bathrooms offer dual-flush valves, low-flow faucets and showerheads, and waterless urinals in a majority of academic and office buildings. In addition, Guilford’s Energy Star Purchasing Policy requires that all electronic purchases be Energy Star or the equivalent. The college’s well-regarded environmental studies program incorporates sustainability into a wide variety of academic fields while focusing on social justice, global awareness, and service to the larger community. Environmentally focused student organizations range from the Green Leaf Coffee Co-Op to a green-themed residence hall. The Physical Education Center has ten elliptical ReRev machines, each harnessing 50 kilowatt hours per thirty-minute session to be used as clean energy source. Students, faculty, and staff can also rent bikes or get a tune-up at The Bike Shop, aimed at encouraging bike riding as a mode of transportation around the area. In addition, students participate in clubs based in the wider Greensboro area, like the Sierra Club, the local organic food co-op, and the Piedmont Hiking and Outing Club.
