Sustainability
It's possible that Gordon College could be synonymous with sustainability. After all, this institution is serious about going green! To begin with, Gordon is committed to decreasing its carbon footprint by reducing its dependence and use of fossil fuels, electricity, and natural gas. More specifically, the college has been busy replacing existing fluorescent lighting with new LED lights all around campus including at the Woodland Parking Lot, the Jenks Learning Resource Center, and the Philips Music Center (among others). The Philips Music Center is also the recipient of a new state-of-the-art energy management system. Changes like these have resulted in a savings of 262,925 kilowatt hours of electricity, 571,676 pounds of carbon dioxide, 16,834 therms of natural gas, $86,916 in energy expenses, and over $100,000 in rebates from National Grid. Not too shabby, right? When it comes to commuting, Gordon also encourages student and staff to think green. The college provides a free shuttle service, which helps individuals in the Gordon community travel around campus and to nearby shopping centers, and additional public transportation. The college also maintains a fleet of vehicles that can be used for car sharing. Among the fleet owned by Gordon are six vehicles that are 100 percent electric, two vehicles that are gasoline-electric, non-plug-in hybrid vehicles, and nine vehicles that are fueled by B20 or higher biofuel for more than six months of the year. You can rest assured that these undergraduates and faculty members can zip around guilt-free!
