Sustainability
Georgia College and State University has been making great strides in embracing and adopting ecofriendly practices. And with the establishment of the Georgia College Sustainability Council, you can rest assured that new initiatives are constantly being evaluated and implemented. More specifically, the college has teamed up with the Clean Air Campaign to promote both carpooling and alternative transportation methods. Students and faculty can use the Bobcat RideShare to find carpooling partners. Additionally, GCSU is investing in the construction of new bike paths between Main Campus and West Campus. And it’s also exploring the possibility of alternative fuels for campus shuttles. Outside of transportation initiatives, the school has agreed to participate in the Governor’s Energy Challenge. To that end, GCSU is pledging to reduce energy consumption to 15 percent below 2007 levels (per square foot) by 2020. In an effort to meet this lofty goal, the school has replaced heating and cooling systems with high energy-efficient systems. GCSU has also installed low-flow fixtures and is upgrading all lighting with either compact fluorescents or LEDs. And, finally, in an effort to get the GCSU community interested and excited in the green movement, the school hosts a handful of fun, annual events such as EarthFest, World Food Day, the Student Green Fee Symposium and Campus Sustainability Day. At these delightful programs, students and faculty can learn about local sustainable farmers, attend fashion shows with repurposed clothing, participate in a community bike ride, and investigate gardening in small spaces.
