  • Sustainability

Denison takes a multi-disciplinary approach to sustainability that balances environmental, economic and social responsibility. This strategy involves the entire campus: facilities, programs, policies, faculty, staff and students. Denison students have the opportunity to live off campus at the Homestead, a student-run, intentional community with a focus on ecological sustainability that houses twelve students per semester in cabins that incorporate a number of green building design principles. Many of the 170 student-run organizations are centered around sustainability issues such agriculture, a bike share program and other green initiatives. The Environmental Studies Program is one of the top ten majors on campus and it and other academic programs require students to work on assignments, research, and internships related to sustainability both on and off campus. Recycling is comprehensive, including construction waste and metal, and composting operations for yard waste and all dining waste. Partnerships with local farms and businesses enhance the local foodshed that will ultimately allow Denison to source nearly 70 percent of its food locally. The college is committed to solar energy with solar arrays located on three buildings, and an undergoing development of a 2MW array that will offset 15 percent of its energy use and 10 percent of its carbon footprint. Two campus buildings have been awarded LEED certification and all future construction projects will be built to LEED standards. As a member of the Founding Circle of the “Billion Dollar Green Challenge,” the college has invested more than $1.8 million in its green revolving loan fund and energy efficiency upgrades are in every campus building.
