Sustainability
An excellent example of Davidson’s commitment is its summer Sustainability Scholars program. The scholars address critical issues through immersive summer projects with a variety of Charlotte-based organizations, from skyscrapers to community gardens in food deserts. The success of this program has led to an expansion with a new location in the Triangle in North Carolina. Ten to twelve scholars live together to learn about and practice sustainable living. The Charlotte program will, once again, live in the Davidson College Eco House. As part of the Climate Action Plan, Davidson College established a policy that all new campus construction be built to at least LEED Silver certification standards, adopted an Energy Star-rated product purchasing policy, implemented multiple waste reduction measures, and integrates its projects into education. Further efforts across the campus community have resulted in four LEED-certified buildings, 378 solar photovoltaic panels, sixty-four solar thermal panels to heat the water used in the pool and showers, an environmental studies major, a three acre farm that provides vegetables and produce to dining services, an organic herb and vegetable garden on the roof of Davidson’s Vail Commons dining hall, a Sustainability-Reps program that trains students to be campus sustainability leaders, a composter diverting food waste from landfill, responsible food procurement practices, and more. The Office of Sustainability supports many federal work-study positions working on food, energy, waste, water, campus engagement, sustainability and sports, sustainable enterprise awareness, student-led creative projects like a food and sustainability website, and more. Students participate in many sustainability organizations: the Environmental Action Coalition, Food Club, Student Athlete Sustainability Council, EcoTeam—an environmental education program for second and third graders in local elementary schools; the Ecological- Cooperative House; Patterson Court Sustainability Council; and more. Davidson encourages students to develop new sustainability ideas by awarding Green Grants up to $2,500 dollars. Davidson College hosts a national business plan competition connecting sustainability, sports and entrepreneurship in which student-led ventures from schools across the country compete for portions of prizes valued at $30,000 or more.
