The College of Wooster was once dubbed the “original best-kept secret in higher education,” but when it comes to its sustainability achievements, there’s no reason to keep quiet. Wooster takes seriously its opportunity to structure college life in “ways that foster informed choices and promote the ideals of sound environmental stewardship.” The crown jewel of Wooster’s green efforts is the Scot Center, an awe-inspiring 123,000- square-foot facility that recently earned LEED Gold certification for its sustainable and energy-efficient design and construction. It boasts a 20,000-square-foot solar array, the largest of any college facility in the United States! Incredibly, the array produces 284,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per year, enough to fully power one of the college’s residence halls. Impressive as the Scot Center is, Wooster’s green building is no one-hit wonder. It recently completed a $5 million dollar Energy Performance Contract, which reduced the college's carbon footprint by 36 percent through lighting and water conservation, building automation system upgrades, and the installation of two new electric chillers and a steam condenser. Dining halls, a coffee bar, and a convenience store offer products from local area farmers; single-stream recycling permeates the campus; and Goodwill donation bins are placed in each dorm. Eco-friendly transportation is offered through the Bike Club (a student-run rental program), Wooster Hospitality Transit (a local bus system through which students, faculty, and staff receive free fare), and Wooster Rideshare. An environmental studies minor includes core courses like environmental analysis and action, as well as a selection of related courses in departments such as economics, psychology, and even religious studies. “Independent Minds, Working Together” is the calling at the College of Wooster, so why not work together to create a sustainable world?
