  • Sustainability

“Defy Convention” is one of the guiding principles of this New York state institution, and that mantra has led Clarkson University to pursue sustainability policies in their own unique way. For instance, Clarkson University has a number of ‘unconventional’ environmental initiatives such as a “No Styrofoam” policy on campus, a commitment to keeping designated areas of campus “forever wild,” and a policy to limit the loss of trees eight inches in diameter or greater during construction. Clarkson has also adopted green building policies, such as a commitment to meeting LEED Silver criteria on all current and future construction. The Technology Advancement Center exceeded that requirement, having achieved LEED Gold. The university hosts a “Take It or Leave It” event at the end of the school year to reduce the stream of trash during move-out weekend, and to give students an opportunity to acquire free, used goods. The Clarkson Institute for a Sustainable Environment sponsors workshops, seminars, and a Sustainability Fund program, as well as undergraduate and graduate-level research experiences on a variety of projects around clean energy, clean water, ecology, and air quality. Students are involved in a range of projects that provide hands-on experience as they make campus more sustainable. Students designed and are operating a year round cold-climate greenhouse, collect food waste from campus kitchens and apartments to feed an anaerobic digester, and build bridges and develop maps for Clarkson’s woods, wetland and river areas. Interdisciplinary minors in sustainable energy systems engineering and sustainable solutions for the developing world are available.
