  • Sustainability

With sustainability listed as a core value of Champlain College, it’s no surprise that the college established the Sustain Champlain Committee way back in 2005. The committee is a group of faculty, staff and students who develop and implement strategies that create a more efficient and environmentally friendly Champlain. The committee assisted with the development of a green building master plan, which calls for the college to “embrace sustainability” in both new construction and renovation. The campus operations have been up to the task with the recent completion of Aiken Hall (LEED Gold), Perry Hall (LEED Platinum), and Butler, Valcour and Juniper residence halls (LEED Gold expected). Aiken Hall features energy-efficient lighting, heating, and elevators; and Perry, Juniper, Butler, and Valcour Halls use a 100 percent geothermal heating and cooling system (56 percent of the total energy consumed by the college is provided by renewable energy)—both serving to reduce the carbon footprint of the college. The school also boasts an impressive 77 percent waste-diversion rate and uses exclusively third party certified green cleaning products. Students have the opportunity to volunteer at the community garden, become an Eco-Rep, or participate in the Sustain Champlain committees that focus on waste reduction, food & purchasing, transportation, academic connections, or Green Revolving Fund. For those looking for a more formal education in sustainability, Champlain College’s major in Environmental Policy, which incorporates the colleges “upsidedown” learning philosophy, gives students the opportunity to dive into the core courses from day one. But offering majors and a dozen courses related to sustainability isn’t enough for this college, as Champlain encourages faculty members to incorporate sustainability issues into their courses—no matter the subject area.
