Sustainability
Located in Eastern Kentucky, Berea College is a model for sustainability in higher education for the Appalachian region and beyond. Berea had both the first LEED-certified building in Kentucky as well as the first LEED-certified hotel, the historic Boone Tavern. Its newest residence hall, Deep Green, was awarded LEED Platinum certification, and, at the time of submission, was one of the highest scoring LEED projects for a building of its type in the world. Deep Green is also on track for Living Building Materials Petal recognition. Another stand out example of Berea’s leadership in sustainability is the Ecovillage residential complex. The Ecovillage provides fifty sustainable residential accommodations for student families. Residents enjoy their own garden plots, low-flush toilets, and an aquaponics system where students raise tilapia, herbs, and vegetables in the recirculating system. Eighty percent of Berea’s 140-acre campus grounds are maintained organically. Berea College is committed to sustainable food sourcing by purchasing from local farmers and maintaining a college farm and garden that provides food to both dining services and the local Farm Store used by college students and employees as well as the community at large. The college has over 8,500 acres of FSC certified forests with hiking, streams, and ponds where students can learn hands-on about the natural world around us, and visitors can enjoy the benefits of sustainable land management. In addition to numerous sustainability courses available across disciplines, Berea College also offers a minor in sustainability and environmental studies.
