  • Sustainability

Auburn University has made a campus-wide commitment to sustainability by signing the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment and adopting a Climate Action Plan, and Auburn is fulfilling that commitment. Student groups are at work on issues of hunger, food, waste, and environment, as well as on approaches to sustainable design, architecture, and landscape. Auburn offers an interdisciplinary minor in sustainability, with introductory and capstone classes and wide-ranging electives taught by experts across a range of academic disciplines. Many Auburn researchers are at work on problems in sustainability, and the University’s growing Office of Sustainability offers training to all Auburn faculty in how to incorporate sustainability topics into their courses. The Office also promotes monthly Campus Conversations about timely and relevant topics and works to see that the University’s operations advance its Climate Action Plan and create a sustainable campus. The University has set bold energy conservation goals and is rapidly achieving increases in energy efficiency and conservation. Alternative transportation options abound. The campus is pedestrian-friendly; hybrid buses transport riders anywhere on campus; bike-, car-, and ride-sharing programs are available. The Auburn campus features five LEED Gold buildings, including the first to be built in Alabama, with more on the way. The living master plan for campus buildings and landscape has made sustainability a primary goal.
