  • Today, the TEXTILES have made inroads in all sectors of life starting from conventional apparel to High performance and Functional Textiles. To develop such innovative Textile Materials, the understanding of basic concepts in their engineering play an important role. This course has been designed to provide insight into ADVANCES IN TEXTILE ENGINEERING through ten INDEPENDENT MODULES. These cover wide spectrum of recent advances in the area of Textile Engineering and will be covered by different experts in the relevant area. The participants can learn these modules in any sequence /order of their choice.

    The module on “Next Generation Fibres” gives an overview of approaches used to design high performance and Smart fibres. The emerging area of on Nanotechnology and its applications in developing textiles with innovative functional properties is discussed in another module. Two modules on Yarn, deal with “Static and dynamic tensile failure of spun yarns” and “Mechanics in yarn manufacturing”. An overview of the fundamental principles that lead to the development of theory of fibre-fibre contacts are included in a module on “Engineering Fibrous Materials via Theory of Fibre-Fibre Contacts”.

    The module on “Textile structural composite materials” deals with the design engineering, manufacturing, characterization and applications of these composites.

    The advancement in the field of textile finishing by using natural substances which are easily degradable and not harmful to ecosystem are included in a module on “Textile Finishing”. The module on “Ink-jet printing onto textiles” has been designed to explain the difference in concept and technology of digital printing vis-à-vis the conventional printing.

    The course also includes two modules on characterization and testing of textiles. The module on “Evaluation of Textile Materials” deals with the principles of evaluation of conventional as well as functional and technical textiles, while the module on Advanced Surface Characterisation techniques will includes fundamental concepts related to these techniques.

    It is expected that this course will help in keeping abreast with newer technologies being developed in the area of Textiles.

    This refresher Course is designed for the Faculty of Textile Engineering as well as Professionals working in Textile industry.

    Module 1

    Next Generation Fibres

    Prof. Manjeet Jassal

    The focus will be on the polymeric linear high performance fibers, with remarkable mechanical properties. The underlying concepts and approaches for design of two such fibres PE gel fibre and rigid rod polymeric fibres will be discussed. Approach to develop; Smart fibres based on stimuli responsive polymers would also be introduced.

    Module 2

    Nanotechnology: A new route to functional Textiles

    Prof. Mangala Joshi

    Basics of Nanoscience: their synthesis, characterization and exciting properties which can be exploited to get innovative functionalities on textiles. The applications of nanotechnology in four broad areas:Polymer Nanocomposites, Nanofinishing, Nanocoating and Nanofibres would be covered.

    Module 3

    Static and Dynamic Tensile Faliure of Spun Yarns

    The yarn failure under static condition does not replicate the spun yarn failure in post spinning operations. The occurrence and nature of weakest places measured under static and dynamic conditions are quite different and therefore their failure behaviours. Yarn tensile failure under static and dynamic failure will be discussed in terms of proportion of fibre breakage, failure zone length and type of broken ends.

    Module 4

    Mechanics in Yarn Manufacturing Process

    Prof. R. Alagirusamy

    The understanding of the mechanics involved in the yarn manufacturing processes plays a key role in development of Newer spinning technologies. Introduction will be provided on how the mechanics plays role in the yarn manufacturing process. Two cases will be taken, one in the conventional yarn manufacturing method and another, in one of the modern spinning systems, and the process mechanics involved in these two cases will be elaborated.

    Engineering Fibrous Materials via Theory of Fibre–Fibre Contacts

    An overview of the fundamental principles that lead to the development of theory of fibre-fibre contacts will be discussed. An attempt will also be made to demonstrate the applicability of theory of fibre-fibre contacts in predicting the mechanical behavior of typical textile materials. Further, the research challenges involved in formulation of theory of fibre-fibre contacts would also be discussed.

    Module 6

    Advanced 3D woven Textile Structures

    Prof. B K Behera

    The development of innovative 3D structures with various geometrical configurations has been explored in recent past. Development of Advanced Woven Textile structures for Near net shape and load bearing applications will be discussed. Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Characterization and Applications of such Textile structural composite materials will also be covered.

    Module 7

    Ink-jet printing onto textiles

    Prof. Kushal Sen


    Difference in concept and technology of digital printing vis-à-vis the conventional printing. Concept of mass production vs customized production would be covered. It will be shown how with only four colours produce millions of shades and thereby enable photographic images. The Various principles of jetting and influence of ink properties on reliability of jetting would also be covered.

    Module 8

    Natural extracts as a promising replacement to synthetic chemicals in textile finishing

    From the 21st century the researchers have started to shift their interest on finishing by natural substances using plant extracts, fruits, animal proteins and their body parts. The advancements in the field of textile finishing by using such natural substances which are easily degradable and not harmful to ecosystem will be discussed.

    Module 9

    Advanced Surface Characterisation Techniques

    Prof. Ashwini K. Agrawal

    Textile materials are often treated to modify their surfaces. This is carried out to enhance the performance for specialised applications. Characterisation of these modified textiles requires understanding of advanced techniques. In this module the participants will be introduced to advanced surface characterisation techniques such as Fourier Transformed Infra Red Spectroscopy (FTIR, ATR-FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Detector (SEM-EDS).

    Module 10

    Evaluation of Textile Materials

    Prof. Apurba Das

    In this course the need of sampling, statistics and result analysis will be discussed. The underlying principles behind test methods would be explained, The Testing of Functional and Technical Textiles will be covered. Numerical problems related to the evaluation of textile materials will also be discussed. to enhance the learning aptitude of participants.
