Free Online Course: Fundamental Concepts of Electricity provided by Swayam is a comprehensive online course, which lasts for 16 weeks long. The course is taught in English and is free of charge. Upon completion of the course, you can receive an e-certificate from Swayam. Fundamental Concepts of Electricity is taught by Prof. A. M. Kulkarni.

Overview
  • This course brings out some fundamental concepts of electricity supply systems through analysis, illustrative /real-life examples and experimental demonstrations. The focus is to make linkages between theory, experiments and practice. One of the objectives is to revisit some basic topics which have gained renewed importance due to new developments that have affected the structure, operation and control of the power system. The coverage will include transient and steady state behaviour of electrical components, considerations in the modeling of electrical elements (lumped/distributed), electrical supply systems: three-phase connections, neutral and grounding, protection and switching. The course also covers key concepts in the control of electrical power generation, power conditioning using power electronics converters, the fundamental and harmonic component of electrical waveforms, power quality, transmission lines/transformers, large power grids, frequency and voltage control. The new developments in power systems like renewable energy systems, wide-area measurement systems and the application of power electronics for high power applications are also presented.

The pre-requisite for this course is an exposure to electro-magnetism, electrical circuits, transformers, electromechanical conversion and electrical power systems.
