  • Sustainability

At The University of Tulsa, students are leading the charge on sustainability. At Golden Hurricane athletic events, the student-run Green Team helps the university’s recycling efforts by making sure recyclables are not thrown in the trash. The Green Team utilizes volunteer student groups for the program during football and basketball games. Meanwhile, the Campus dining program is committed to bringing in as much organic and locally produced goods as possible. The program has allowed local dairies and farms to supply an increasing amount of organic foods to TU. The administration is committed to sustainability and has numerous programs to improve the campus’s environmental footprint. Recycling bins and totes are handed out to students, and the university aims to meet LEED standards in its building construction. In the dining hall, an Orca Green Machine helps cut down on landfill waste by decomposing food scraps. All dining facilities completely eliminated trays in 2014. On campus shuttles run on compressed natural gas, and students who want to use a healthy and green transportation option can use one of the 450 bicycles in the Yellow Bicycle Loan Program. The campus-wide recycling program went single stream in 2012.This increases engagement on campus by making recycling easier for everyone to participate. Among the school’s paper-saving initiatives, employees and students are required to utilize direct deposit for transactions and the campus phone directory is entirely online. TU’s “Earth Friendly Majors” include those in environmental policy, earth and environmental sciences, and geology with an environmental concentration.
