Sustainability
Located in the center of Omaha’s metropolitan community, the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) partners with over 250 organizations on everything from sustainability to food security. The focus on building and maintaining sustainable communities is reflected in 380,000 hours of community service that UNO students served in 2014. Sustainability is one of five campus academic priorities and can be found throughout academics, research, operations, and outreach. The university offers an environmental studies program, minor in sustainability, and sustainability concentrations within its Bachelor of General Studies Degree and Master of Business Administration programs. The UNO Center for Urban Sustainability advances urban sustainability education, research, and partnerships across the community, the region, and planet. Mammel Hall, UNO’s first LEED-Certified (Gold) building was the first LEED-certified academic building in the state. In 2014, UNO was named a Tree Campus USA campus for the fourth year. The university’s sustainability master plan includes goals for carbon neutrality and zero waste. UNO partners with the Omaha Public Power District to host an Academy of Sustainable Environments & Renewable Energy for students and partners with the Green Omaha Coalition (GOC), with members serving its Board of Directors and is a regular host for meetings and events. With the GOC, UNO annually co-sponsors the Reel-to-Real film festival and the Green Home Tour and Expo. UNO unquestionably values sustainability and sees it as a means by which it can achieve its goals of placing students first, being academically excellent, and engaging with the community.
