Sustainability
University of Massachusetts—Boston’s new Integrated Science Complex was the focus of the Green Buildings Tour for the ACUPCC 2014 Presidential Summit of Climate Leadership in Boston. The school was recognized by the state’s department of transportation for excellence in commuting options. The school’s first 74-kilowatt capacity solar photovoltaic array generated more than 87,000 kWh in FY14 .and it is currently completing its second new building, the General Academic Building seeking LEED Silver certification. It’s the only public university in Massachusetts to have signed the international Talloires Declaration, and is part of the ACUPCC. The school has an extensive recycling program and composting program as well as a student-led leftover food harvesting program.. Organic coffee and locally grown food is widely available and dining services uses cage-free eggs. Biodegradable plates and trays from the Campus Center dining hall are composted. The harbor location of the school allows students to learn about sustainability at the new UMB School for the Environment. participate in residential marine research programs at Nantucket, collaborate with Boston area colleges onsustainability, clean energy internships, develop green harbors projects applying concepts of Living Labs and biomicry, and more. The free campus shuttle fleet conveys increasing numbers of students from three satellite locations around campus to the subway and back. Student-led installation of hydration stations save more than 300,000 bottles from reaching landfills a year while its bike share program, Hubway, is in its third year. Degrees and professional certifications in environmental sciences, green chemistry, clean energy and sustainable facilities management complement campus engagement in regional marine conservation, global environmental governance and renewable energy economics. The campus is working on leading regional climate preparedness planning and resilience efforts.
