  • Sustainability

The University of Colorado Denver knows that sustainability is “the only way that we will be able to continue to provide a high quality education for current and future students.” One of the university’s two campuses, the Anschutz Medical Campus, has been awarded STARS Silver rating. On both campuses, newly constructed buildings are built to LEED Gold or higher design standards. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the university standard for sustainable building strategies. Currently, CU Denver is working for LEED certification for a new Health and Wellness Center among other projects. The university’s Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Systems has been featured everywhere from NPR to the New York Times and has teamed up with over twenty Colorado cities to develop sustainable infrastructure plans. Both the Denver campus and the Anschutz Medical Campus offer single stream recycling where all recyclable materials are collected in one large container. In addition, both campuses have access to Zimride, a free rideshare program that lets students save money and help the environment at the same time. In 1993, CU Denver established the Wirth Chair in Environmental and Community Development Policy to bring businesses, governments, and non-profits together for sustainable initiatives. Students who want a green degree can now minor in sustainability with an interdisciplinary course load culled from the biology, anthropology, history, philosophy departments, and more. Many graduate programs including the Business School also have sustainable specializations.
