Sustainability
Colorado Springs is located at the foot of the majestic Pikes Peak, one of the most famous mountains in the Rockies. Being surrounded by gorgeous mountains and forests, it is not surprising that the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs places the highest value on environmental sustainability. UCCS has many completed or in-progress buildings that meet LEED Gold certification standards such as the Gallogly Events Center and the new Recreation Center. The Recreation Center uses solar energy to heat the swimming pool, and the school is installing photovoltaic solar systems on the roofs of several campus buildings. Currently, the school generates nearly 40,000 watts of clean sun-powered energy. UCCS is a charter participant in the STARS program and proudly sports a STARS Silver rating seal on their website. An essential part of environmentally-friendly living is sustainable food practices, and the UCCS makes plenty of effort to help students eat green. For example, since 2013 the Greenhouse and Garden has grown healthy and tasty organic food for the dining hall right on campus! The school encourages bike use, and there are two bike repair stations and numerous bike racks on campus. The yearly Bike Month Challenge encourages students and faculty to use this healthy transportation method by awarding prizes for riding and commuting on bike. Academically, the school offers minors in earth science and sustainable development and dozens of courses that focus on the environment. All undergraduates now have sustainability integrated into the General Education Compass Curriculum.
