Sustainability
Located in the western province of Alberta, the University of Calgary is a leader in Canadian sustainability. The University of Calgary’s Child Development Centre was the first LEED Platinum-certified building in Alberta. In 2013, the school received a STARS Gold rating and the highest overall score of any institution in Canada. On campus, the school encourages students to go green with a variety of programs such as discounts on coffee and meals when students use reusable mugs and Eco-Containers. UCalgary students also work hard to make their school environmentally friendly, and there are over twenty-two clubs involved in sustainability efforts. Examples are the Hope 2 Opportunity (H2O) group focusing on water disparity in developing countries and the Eco Club, which hosts “Swap Till You Drop” events for students to exchange clothes and electronics instead of throwing them away. The Students’ Union Sustainability Board awards thousands in funds to student-run sustainability projects such as selling fair trade products in the MacEwan Student Centre and the “Eat Dirt” composting program. Students who want a green major can get one in environmental science, engineering with an energy and environment specialization, or the Corporate Social Responsibility Sustainable Development Program for undergraduates in the commerce program. UCalgary’s student body is largely commuter, so the school works hard to increase green transportation with carpooling, an affordable Car2Go car share program, and a bicycle library where students can check out a bike for up to two weeks
