Sustainability
Students at St. Edward’s looking to plot a course to a more sustainable college career can start by consulting the school’s Campus Sustainability Map, which identifies locations like recycling and composting stations, bicycle racks, LED lights, coffee shops that offer a bring-your-own-cup discount, and the school’s Students for Sustainability Garden. The Office of Sustainability and Facilities Department help implement initiatives around campus, from lighting retrofitting and thermal storage tanks for chilled water supply to low-flow plumbing fixtures. They also support sustainable landscaping across campus, planting native vegetation that require less water and composting lawn trimmings to supply water-conserving mulch for trees and flower gardens. The Environmental Stewardship Committee helps promote environmental education and reduce individual and institutional impacts on the environment; students who want to get involved with this mission can join the Students for Sustainability organization. For those wanting a more hands-on approach, St. Edward’s is home to the Wild Basin Creative Research Center, which is an extension of the main campus and includes 227 acres within the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve system. Here, students are encouraged to pursue interdisciplinary projects. At Café Bon Appétit, one of the on-campus dining options, the Styrofoam to-go containers have been replaced with compostable paper ones and students who get take-out food often can choose to buy a reusable container for a one-time fee. On the university’s website, students can check out “Green Tips for Toppers,” which encourages them to remember that “If you don’t need it, don’t get it. If you can use it again, do it. Once you can’t use it anymore, recycle it.”
