Sustainability
Awarded the 2013 Tree Campus USA recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation for its dedication to trees and engaging students in conservation efforts, Spelman College is also one of three locations in Atlanta chosen to participate in the Greater Atlanta EcoDistrict initiative. The EcoDistrict initiative aims to promote locally sourced food, energy efficient retrofitting, and youth-led park designs in the hopes of gaining community support for sustainability practices. Spelman led the way with its LEED-certified residence hall suites, the first of its kind on a Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) campus, and has been recognized for its use of non-toxic cleaners, paperless business practices, and low-maintenance landscaping that utilizes water recycled from storm water and cooling systems. When constructing Spelman’s green dorm, known as The Suites, 20 percent of building materials were manufactured locally and 75 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills (the dorm itself includes ten recycling stations). The college’s Sustainability Pledge, an online checklist students are encouraged to complete, provides tips to save energy in all aspects of campus life, from powering down your computer when it’s not in use and changing out incandescent light bulbs with compact florescent ones, to taking the stairs instead of elevators and washing only full loads of clothes using just warm or cold water. Earth Week, not just Earth Day, is celebrated at Spelman, and there’s often a panel discussion for students to learn more about jobs in the environmental sector, from science to law.
