  • Sustainability

Seattle Pacific is an ACUPCC signatory and has set a goal of carbon neutrality by 2036. SPU composts on campus and donates used cooking oil to biodiesel manufacturers. SPU’s newest building, Arnett Residence Hall, is on target to receive LEED Silver certification and features a green roof, heat recovery, and LED garage and site lighting. Students play an active role in sustainability efforts by running the campus community garden and community kitchen clubs. Additionally, a senior honors project culminated in the installation of a solar photovoltaic array atop the physics and engineering building; it produces enough energy to replenish the electric grid with electricity equal to that consumed by the campus’ fleet of electric maintenance vehicles. Students also have the chance to enhance their environmental awareness through taking ecology courses and conducting research at a field station on nearby Blakely Island, and through intensive study abroad programs offered over winter breaks. These for-credit trips focus on tropical biology. Program sites alternate between Belize and the Galapagos Islands, providing opportunities for students to learn about coral reef ecology (Belize) and one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world (Galapagos Islands). Even better, the tropical studies trips are not exclusive to biology majors and minors—non-majors can go to fulfill general education credits.
