Sustainability
"At San Diego State University, “Sustainability Starts Here.” With a vibrant sustainability community, campus is dedicated to enacting positive change for the environment and society. The Sustainability Major and Minor program prepares students for careers in the field, while hundreds of classes are either focused on or related to sustainability. At least one hundred researchers on campus are working to further our understanding of sustainability issues. Student groups are particularly engaged in sustainability through groups such as GreenLove, E3, GreenFest, Voice for Veg, Engineers Without Borders, and the Sage Club. The Center for Regional Sustainability supports several programs that connect the campus with the greater community, including the Sage Project, BrightSide Produce, and the Social and Economic Vulnerabilities Initiative. Sustainable SDSU is the official campus sustainability effort, which employs staff and a team of student interns to improve campus operations, engage in outreach, shift culture, and coordinate events. SDSU has a Climate Action Plan that commits campus to achieving operational carbon neutrality by 2040 and full carbon neutrality by 2050. The campus has a dedication to green buildings, reducing its impact on the environment and providing optimal space for learning, teaching, researching, and working. SDSU has nine buildings with LEED certification and all future buildings must achieve LEED Silver certification. The flagship green building is the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, which has received the highest certification level – LEED Platinum – twice; first for its design and construction and then for its operation and maintenance. In recent years, the campus has expanded its waste diversion program, including hundreds of new recycling and composting bins, participation in the RecycleMania competition, and a system that weighs each dumpster – allowing campus to pinpoint recycling rates by building areas. The Campus Grown program produces fresh and local food that is used in eateries. The program includes over 35 raised beds and forty aeroponic towers. These towers at The Garden eatery produce over 500 heads of leafy greens every week while reducing water consumption by upwards of 90%."
