Sustainability
Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is the oldest university west of the Mississippi River. For this Catholic, Jesuit university, working to find environmentally friendly and sustainable ways to live on this planet certainly aligns with its mission to serve a higher purpose by contributing to the greater good. Recently, the Sierra Club named SLU as one of its “Cool Schools” for its commitment to sustainability. Food served on campus is purchased from many local family farms, and SLU attempts to purchase as much organic and sustainable food products as possible, such as cage-free shell eggs and organic produce. The University, and its dining services, take pride in both reducing waste and reinvesting in the community. Part of being green is avoiding as much landfill waste as possible. In an effort to increase campus recycling, SLU has a single-stream recycling service in which students and staff can easily place all recyclable materials in the same container. The University is planning to start a bike-sharing program in 2015, beginning with 10 campus bicycles. Currently, the University offers bike racks and showers for bicycle commuters at several facilities. On the academic front, the University has two degree programs that have sustainability learning outcomes: master of science in sustainability and master of arts in urban planning and real estate development. The University’s state-of-the-art Doisy Research Center - built in part with recycled steel, bamboo, and cork - was awarded LEED certification after it was constructed in 2007.
