  • Sustainability

With campus colors of green and white and named for Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, a presidential couple who made substantial humanitarian contributions, it is natural that Roosevelt University is a leader in sustainability. And just like its namesakes, the university is quickly achieving a reputation for getting things done. During the last two years, Roosevelt has earned the 2013 USGBC-IL Green Schools Emerald Award for Green Innovation, LEED Gold and Silver on two new buildings in Chicago, SERF (Society of Environmentally Responsible Facilities) Certification for the University’s new Wabash Building, Silver level from the Illinois Higher Education Sustainability Compact, and completed a transformation to native prairie at its Schaumburg Campus. Renewable Energy Credits offset 53.9 percent of Roosevelt’s annual electricity use. The university dining center food waste is converted to compost and exported to community and native flower gardens at the Schaumburg Campus where it is used as fertilizer. These accomplishments, paired with the university’s community participation in USGBC Illinois Chapter as board member, AASHE, EPA’s Green Power Partnership, and designation as a Tree Campus USA and a Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation, help keep Roosevelt on the leading edge of sustainability. Students participate in the campus sustainability efforts through recycling programs, on-site composting, prairie walk, rooftop vegetable, herb and community gardens and the University’s Environmental Sustainability committee. The university has committed to further its green efforts by meeting measurable goals as a part of plans to achieve Gold in 2015 through the Illinois Higher Educational Sustainability Compact. These efforts will cement the university’s leadership role in sustainability in the Midwest.
