  • Sustainability

Graceland University’s small (about 1,100 undergraduates), private liberal arts community in Lamoni, Iowa, advances a Christian mission from a campus that spans over 170 acres in “the rolling hills of southern Iowa.” The centerpiece of Graceland’s environmental commitment is the campus’s EcoPlot, which provides students with a hands-on learning landscape for sustainable food practices. The EcoPlot contains a hoop house, or high tunnel, which is a solar-heated garden structure designed to lengthen the growing season and intensify crop production. In the hoop house, students grow herbs and vegetables that are then distributed to the campus dining hall and several local markets. In addition, EcoPlot students maintain an orchard of strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and chokeberries. In concert with the EcoPlot’s work, Graceland is in the process of implementing a campus-wide, in-vessel (an enclosed method of collecting compost that produces a low-labor, uniform, and saleable product) composting program. The campus has already dedicated $20,000 to this effort and continues to seek funding for it. Graceland recently initiated a bike-sharing program to provide students with twelve bikes that can be rented for three-hour windows daily, and the university offers an affordable ($4.95 - $9.50 per hour) car-sharing program as well. Its cleaning products are largely Green Seal Certified. The campus has cultivated a new rain garden to collect runoff water, and mixed recycling containers are widely available. Students may take their passion for sustainability into the classroom with Graceland’s minor in environmental studies, connect with peers through eco-oriented internships and student worker positions offered by the college, or join the student-run Trash Talkers Student Club.
