Sustainability
DePaul University has wholeheartedly embraced the green movement. Indeed, in the last few years, the university’s Sustainability Initiatives Task Force (SITF) has worked tirelessly to ensure that DePaul is an agent of social change. To that end, the school has promised that any and all future construction projects will be LEED-certified. DePaul has also begun installing green roofs on several buildings and expects to add more as funding becomes available. Additionally, the university has installed low-flow shower heads in student dormitories as well as sink hardware that limits use (via either motion activation or compressor timer). Even campus facilities is getting in on the act; they’ve reduced the watering schedule and frequency for the surrounding landscape. Recycling is another environmental initiative that remains extremely popular on the DePaul campus. Due to the school’s robust program, 70 to 80 tons of material are recycled on a monthly basis. The campus also boasts an impressive number of water refill stations (approximately 80). It’s estimated these stations generate an excess of 2 million uses annually, substantially cutting down the number of new water bottles purchased. Moreover, the “Swap Program,” run by the Housing Service, ensures that more than 100 tons of miscellaneous appliances, furniture and other goods avoid landfills. Instead, they are sold at the end of the school year. The proceeds are then donated to local charities as are any unsold goods. In other words, your old, unwanted coffee maker can still find a good home!
