Sustainability
Going green is a hands-on enterprise at Brandeis University. Now in its fourth funding cycle, the Brandeis Sustainability Fund awards $50,000 annually to student-run sustainability projects on campus. Using the fund, students have brought bottle filling stations, bike shelters, energy dashboards, drying racks, and many other innovative sustainability solutions to Brandeis. Also thanks to the Sustainability Fund and a student proposal, Brandeis is now home to the first third party owned solar thermal hot water system in the state, which now supplies hot water to four residence halls. Students interested in sustainability themes can choose to major in environmental studies or pursue a green MBA. A community-engaged learning course called “Greening the Ivory Tower” offers students the opportunity to “explore strategies for creating healthy, vigorous, environmentally sustainable communities in the face of increasingly challenging environmental problems.” The Gosman Sports and Convocation Center, utilizing 1,200 high-efficiency photovoltaic modules, generates solar power in one of the largest solar arrays in Massachusetts. Thanks to investments in efficiency programs, the campus has reduced energy use by more than 15 percent since 2005. New buildings are required to meet LEED Silver standards or better, featuring energy-efficient designs and recycled materials. All waste from dining halls is sent to a commercial composting facility. Brandeis is proud of the impressive student engagement in activism and education on environmental issues, including participation in Eco-Reps and Students for Environmental Action, just to name two. Brandeis students are giving back even when they’re not on campus—the school’s Give & Go campaign encourages students to donate rather than throw away items during move out weekend.
